# The Goldwatch
![[Goldwatch_Sigil.webp|300]]
For centuries, the Goldwatch have been the enforcers of Guild Law in a lawless land, above and apart from the politics and petty squabbles between the city-states of the Valley. Scattered throughout the land, operating alone or in small cells, the Goldwatch are bringers of justice - and often death. Theirs is a higher calling, likewise demanding a higher level of skill, competence, and ability, for the life of a Goldwatch is unpredictable, full of adventure and peril.
They are a separate organization, often mediating between the Guilds, but can also serve as investigators, bounty hunters, diplomats, spies, bodyguards, and advisors. They're powerful individuals whose authority is universally understood to be backed by their own force and the power of the Guilds.
### Goldwatch Tenets
- Uphold the integrity of the Guilds - their laws, their members, their property, their interests.
- Defend and surveil the free peoples.
- Monitor and prevent threats to the peace.
- Facilitate co-ordination between the Guilds and the Cities.
### Goldwatch Ranks
Though Goldwatch culture varies from city to city (and from century to century), the hierarchy within the order transcends such differences; the rank of a Goldwatch corresponds to a combination of their seniority, accomplishments, power, and influence. Junior Goldwatches, freshly inducted, belong to the First Gear. Once a Goldwatch has earned their advancement, they are promoted to Second Gear, and so on. The requirements for advancement to higher Gears increasing dramatically with each level. As such, very high level Goldwatches are rare, but there is theoretically no limit to the rank that a Goldwatch can achieve.
