# Society ## Social Structure The largest settlements in the Valley are essentially sovereign city-states, controlled by local powers and the Guilds. The Guilds have a presence in each major city, so their influence spans the length and breadth of the Valley. Outside the cities, the world can be lawless and dangerous, a perfect place for adventure. ## Slavery Gladiators represent the most common form of slavery, and nearly every major city has a fighting pit of some size. This type of slavery is more akin to the ancient Greek or Roman style, rather than racially motivated. The Gladiator Lords are an institution unto themselves, and though they often collaborate with the Guilds, their agenda is their own. ## Magic & Technology The world is steeped in old magic, and as such it is never far from the fingertips of those lucky or determined enough to be able to access it. Elementals serve as the power cells of mechanical devices, including airships and the lightning rail.
